A small, casual restaurant with lots of takeaway orders

Located a minute’s walk away from Ekkamai BTS station, this is a local gem in Bangkok renowned for its Pad Kaprao (ผัดกะเพรา) – which is a stir-fried combination of holy basil, chillies, garlic, seasoning, and a minced protein. From its name and the number of international visitors, you might also recognise that this restaurant belongs to Mark Wiens, the hugely popular YouTuber.

The staff were friendly and used to welcoming people familar with Mark

In fact, Phed Mark is owned by Mark Wiens along with three of his friends, who are food lovers and chefs. One night, when they were debating where the best Pad Kaprao was served in Bangkok, the idea to make it in their own restaurant was borne.

Phed Mark has a simple, friendly impression as soon as you walk in. The seating is limited as the space is small, and during meal times you will see delivery drivers lining up to collect their order.

A touching note from Mark Weins for his customers

The famous Pad Kaprao with egg yolks that just need popping

Such is the popularity of the famous Thai comfort food Pad Kaprao here that at times you will have to wait in line to order. It’s available in five spice levels, with a cheeky Level 2 named “Very Less Spicy”. Unique to Phed Mark, you can choose from 7 proteins to stir-fry alongside the usual ingredients. These include squid, wagyu shank, and sour pork. There is also a vegetarian version available.

Did you know that “Phed” means “spicy” and “Maak” means “very much” in Thai? The restaurant name is a punny homage to Mark Wiens’ love for spicy food.
